Can an Apple a Day Keep the Dr Away?

Can an Apple a Day Keep the Dr. Away - MOMables.comI love to shop for fresh produce.  I am always seeking out what is in season mostly because local fruits and vegetables tend to be picked closer to being ripe than picked green and transported thousands of miles before they reach my grocery store.

Living in the south, I don’t have a fantastic farmers market like I did when I lived in California, or beautiful orchards to go pick through; I have a small bi-weekly farmers market located 25minutes away.  When I do go to the market, I stock up on what I can and get creative with the ingredients.

This week, I noticed that apples were abundant (great for price) and although I purchased about 5lbs, it made me wonder: Can an apple a day keep the dr away?  What are apples made of anyway?

Apples are made of:

  • water (about 85%)
  • protein
  • lipids
    • palmitic acid
    • stearic acid
    • oleic acid
    • linoloic acid
    • linoleic acid
  • carbohydrates
    • glucose
    • fructose
    • sucrose
    • starch
    • sorbit
  • Organic acids
  • fiber
  • minerals
    • sodium
    • potassium
    • magnesium
    • calcium
    • manganese
    • iron
    • copper
    • zinc
    • phosphorous
    • chloride
    • fluoride
    • iodine
    • selenium
  • vitamins
    • carotene
    • Vitamin E
    • Vitamin K
    • Vitamin B1
    • Vitamin B2
    • nicotinamide
    • pantothenic acid
    • Vitamin B6
    • biotin 1
    • Folic acid
    • Vitamin C
  • amino acids
  • malic acid
  • citric acid
  • oxalic acid
  • salicylic acid
  • purines
So, there you have it.  Apples are definitely good for you and can help in keeping the Dr away!  That is… if you wash your hands prior to grabbing that apple! :)
