A New Twist on Waffles: Pizza!

I am excited to be sharing my first YUMMY post with you. These golden, crispy dippers are fun for the whole family. Did I mention that they are DELICIOUS?! At first glance, I know you are all thinking “WHAT?! Waffle, melted cheese and pizza sauce? Huh?” Don’t run away screaming yet. The waffle part isn’t really waffles…. it’s a crescent roll. Now I have your attention!  Convenient, semi healthy and you can even find them whole wheat!

For this recipe I used regular crescent rolls, but you could also use whole-wheat ones as well.  I used non-stick olive oil spray on my iron, which made that a simple clean up. It’s the area around the waffle iron that gets a tad bit messy. The cheese oozed out onto the counter, but that was a small price to pay for such a fun, crispy treat.  My 2 & 4 year olds devoured these. My husband was quite upset… he was hopping for more leftovers.  I hope you love these savory dippers as much as we did!

Savory Waffle Dippers

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Total Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 7 oz of Italian Blend cheese (or mozzarella)
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 2 cans (8oz each) crescent rolls
  • 1 jar pizza sauce
  • pepperoni slices (about 32 slices, omit for vegetarian option)

Directions

  1. Preheat waffle iron to medium/high. Unroll first can of dough flat on a working surface.
  2. Separate each crosswise, making 2 7x6inch rectangles.
  3. Firmly press perforations to seal. Repeat for second can. After doing this for both cans, you should have 4 large 7 x6 rectangles.
  4. Combine cheese, basil, oregano and set aside.
  5. Place one 7x6inch rectangle on the waffle iron.
  6. Place 1/2(about 1 cup) of the cheese mixture on the dough.
  7. Top with layer of pepperoni. If you are not a fan of pepperoni, could also add sliced ham or bacon. For vegetarian option, omit pepperoni, and add more cheese if desired.
  8. Top with another 7x6 in rectangle . Close waffle iron and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  9. Repeat with other 2 dough sheets. Cut into triangles and serve with side of pizza sauce for dipping.
