Need the perfect cookie to add to the lunch box? These apple pie cookies are perfectly sweet and delicious with the added apple crunch.
I love apple pie. The crunchy filling, a hint of vanilla, and all those warm spices make it a delicious dessert. However, apple pie slices are hard to sell at a bake sale. They are sticky, you need plates and forks—they just don’t work well.
I chose apples because they are available year-round. And, for this recipe, I wanted to create a cookie that would have some of the classic flavors, include fresh fruit, and be easy to make. Wanting to stay true to all of MOMables recipes, I also wanted a lunch box–worthy cookie. A cookie that would make kids happy.
Wouldn’t these make an awesome addition to the lunch box? Think of them as portable little apple pies—almost. Between this recipe and the never-ending stream of ideas in the MOMables Menus, your family will be eating a bigger variety of foods than ever!

Made these cookies before and they are delish! I came back to this recipie because I want to make it again, but the ingredients seem to be missing?
MOMables
Sorry about that Rachael! the recipe has been updated.
Lauren
Found your blog because my husband wanted a baked good today and I googled apple pie cookies! I halved the recipe since its just the 2 of us and grated the apple rather than chopped. Husband approved! Thank you for a great recipe and fun twist on a cookie!
MOMables
I’m glad both of you enjoyed them Lauren!
Alex
Came across this recipe because my flat mate threw a couple of apples at me that she was going to throw out. They were red, very ripe apples but they worked really well! Loved this recipe. Will make it again lots. Thank you for posting!

I was just wondering if you thought these would still turn out okay without sugar. My son is on a no sugar diet and I have been trying to find cookies/sweets that still taste good but don’t have any added sugar. He can’t eat most artificial sweeteners either which makes it difficult to find good sweet recipes. He loves apples so I figured he would love these.
Thank you
MOMables
Megan, I have not tried them without sugar. You could substitute apple sauce. if you do, let me know how they came out.
Brittany
Apples were just on sale and we bought a whole bunch of them. I’m putting them to good use and trying this recipe tomorrow. :D

Your ingredient list is for soften butter and then you mention to add melted butter. Am I melting the butter or it is just soft. Usually when you cream these together the butter is not melted
MOMables
You are correct Robyn. The butter should be “softened”. Thank you for catching that! I’ve made the correction on the recipe.

The written instructions on this recipe don’t have “add cinnamon” included. Ooh! Ooh! my oven timer just went off! apple pie cookies for the neighbors tonight! …and my fam too, of course.
Tanya
I made these yesterday and found one major problem…I can’t stop eating them!! Delicious! Thank you!!!
MOMables
Thank you Tanya! (pppppssstt: you can freeze uncooked dough)

Have you tried them with egg replacer? We are egg allergic at my house.
MOMables
Lisa, they will work with flax-egg.
Elizabeth
I’m making my second batch of these in less than a week! My husband (who is not normally a cookie eater) cannot get enough!! Thank you so much for the recipe – these are the best cookies I’ve had in quite awhile!
MOMables
so glad you guys loved them Elizabeth!! :)

I just made these. I cut the sugars to 1/3 cup each. My cookies didn’t flatten, but they taste great! Thanks for the recipe :)
Kathleen
Making these now, for my son for when he gets home from school! They aren’t coming out flatish like in your photo so not sure where I went wrong there, but hoping they still come out ok.
MOMables
they aren’t big and fluffy cookies. mine are flat-ish too but the taste is amazing either way.
Kathleen
My family loved these so much, I am actually making more today! I stored them in my cookie jar but they got very soft and wet like! Is there a way to make these last a bit longer or does the fresh apple kind of add moisture?
MOMables
Kathleen, place a slice of sandwich bread inside your cookie jar. the sandwich bread slice absorbs the moisture so that the cookies dont’ get mushy. :)
Kathleen
Oh, ok! I had never heard that before thanks so much. I just made another batch and forgot to put cinnamon so had to add it a few pans in. I’m sure they will still be delicious though! Thanks so much for continuing to respond, this is a fantastic website!
MOMables
Thanks so much Kathleen! Cinnamon is one of those ingredients that it’s relatively small in most recipes and I often forget to add it in too! happy baking!
Jennifer
These cookies look so yummy! Do you have any gluten-free “bake sale” recipes?
MOMables

Would red apples work? I don’t have any Granny Smith apples and I wanted to make these today.
MOMables
