This dairy-free chocolate frosting recipe will frost a 2 layer, 9″ round cake.


  • ½ cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened, canned coconut milk or non-dairy creamer


  1. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, beat the vegetable shortening until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the vanilla, cocoa powder, and powdered sugar.
  3. While mixing on medium speed, add the coconut milk or creamer slowly until all ingredients are combined, and the frosting is smooth.
  4. If the frosting is too thick, add more creamer 1 tablespoon at a time. If it’s too runny, add more powdered sugar 1 tablespoon at a time.
  5. This frosting is ready to use once the cake has cooled completely.
