MOMables' Happier Plates
Digital Masterclass

I couldn’t believe it. I lost my cool (again) at the dinner table.

The first time I blew up, I felt awful. But this happened more than once.

Once again, I yelled at my son because he wouldn’t try the steak -the time before I think was over green beans.

I tried to encourage him to eat.

“If you tried it, you might like it.” And, “just one bite.”

But he kept refusing to try anything.

"I DON'T LIKE MEAT!" He’d yell.

“But you haven’t even tried it!” I’d reply.

No meat. No veggies, No fruit. He didn’t “like” anything.

I was at a loss at what to feed my own child and I thought I was going to have a mental breakdown...

Hi, I’m Laura Fuentes, and I’m sharing this story with you today because I’m a mom of 3 kids, and for years, the dinner table at my house was a battlefield. EVERY.SINGLE.NIGHT.

Night after night, I would fight with one of my kids over food. With my husband over our "parenting" differences, and my kids were there in the front row to watch it all.

It was all so stressful.

Inside I was ashamed because mealtimes brought out the worst in me.

"I'm so over it!" I'd tell my husband.

I just wanted our kids to get the nutrition they needed from food, establish healthy eating habits, and get through a meal without fighting, tantrums, or negotiating.

I felt like I tried everything, too. And soon, I began to realize...

this wasn't a "stage."

Our family pediatrician assured me that many kids are "picky" and it's a common struggle around the age of two.

He assured me, “all you have to do is keep offering them foods and they’d eat them… eventually.”

Years went by and no one outgrew this stage on their own.

I kept researching. I read books. I hired experts and spent thousands of dollars.

I talked to other moms. And that’s when I realized that everything out there about “picky eating” was bad advice.

As a matter of fact…

I was desperate, and I kept trying everything.

Failed Tactic #1:
The “One Bite Rule.

I tried the “one bite rule.”

(If you haven’t heard about this, it’s when you encourage your child to “take just one bite”). It didn’t work.

What was I thinking? This only made my child resent mealtimes more.

I tried gentle "positive" encouragement.

“Just try it! You might like it.”

But his face told the another story.

He'd puff up her chest, scrunch his nose, and shake his head… NO.

Then, my husband got an idea…

“How about we bribe him with dessert?!”

I couldn’t help but laugh. This is her mother’s child. No bribe is going to work. But I was open to trying it…

And…  it didn’t work.

I was at a loss.

FAILED TACTIC #4: force the kid to eat

So, I forced him to eat it.

“You are not getting up from the table until you finish your food.”

And that’s when  sh*t hit the fan.

“See, you upset him!” he said.

I know he didn’t mean it, but I got so mad at him. Am I a bad mom because I want my child to eat a variety of foods?

They’re healthy and he needs the nutrition!

It got worse, too.

The dinner table became a battlefield filled with tears, tantrums, and arguments.

First, me and my children would fight. Then, I would fight with my husband.

I needed help. And everyone I asked had their own "fix" and opinions...

What they said: “Your picky eater will outgrow it!”
What I found: No, your picky eater does not always outgrow it.”

What they said: “It takes 15+ times for a child to try something before they like it!”
What I found: “Sometimes you can’t even get your child to try something ONCE”

What they said: “They are just asserting their independence.”
What I found:  “Okay. I buy it. In the 18 month to 3 year range. But what about an 8 year old?”

What they said: “They’ll eat when they’re hungry”
What I found:
“Sometimes they will just refuse to eat, and throw a tantrum about how hungry they are before bed.”

What they said: “Keep offering the food. One day they will try it.”
What I found:
“Useless, since that’s exactly what I was doing and not working”

I used to like cooking for my family, but the dinner table became a battlefield between the kids and adults, and between my husband and me.

And I was making multiple meals for my family - I was was completely exhausted.

I felt like a terrible mother.

I know wasn’t -but I thought it -because I felt powerless.

And that’s when I began to take control of the situation.

I realized I couldn't change or force my child -but I could transform dinnertime and shift our experiences.

And then, something crazy happened…

If I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it, but it set me on a path where I eventually figured out the solution to “picky eating” with children.

Fast forward to today, I have 3 awesome kids, and my son?

She eats meat like he a caveman -it's his favorite food.

So, what was the secret?

After struggling for so long, I felt helpless. Until one day. I saw the secret behind how to make the dinner table a happier place where my kids would try new foods.

I’ll never forget it.

It was our first trip to Los Angeles and on a whim, we decided to stop at IN-and-OUT Burger.

My kid ATE MEAT!! And I caught it on camera. It all seemed so innocent, and that was the trick!

I realized that I was doing "all the right things" except ONE BIG insight:

I was pressuring my kid to eat, without knowing it - and he didn't like it.

He did it again. OMG he kept eating his burger! Even his brother couldn't believe it -so I took a photo.

So, what was the big secret? How did my son finally eat meat and I didn’t even ask him “take a bite” or “try it”?

You might be thinking... "it’s because nobody was pressuring him!"

Or, “when you finally stopped nagging him to take a bite or try it, he did it!”

And that’s all true.

But I noticed something else, too.

Kids want to try new foods…

...but the pressure is just as stressful for your child as it is for you.

Believe me.

As annoying as they are, they don’t want to disappoint you. Or upset you. But they do want to feel like they have some semblance of control over their life and the big problem?

Most parents approach “fixing” picky eating the same way I did it.

And it fails miserably.

After years of working with experts, I’ve figured out the secrets to transforming our mealtimes, and I'm relieved.

Our family now enjoys dinner.

Without the headaches. Without the tantrums. Without the fights.

As the founder of MOMables, 4x Cookbook Author, Recipe Developer, the lady that cooks on television and YouTube...

And even though I’ve shared this story before, thousands of parents have reached out over the years and told me they dread mealtimes.

They don't know what to make. They fight with their kids, their spouse, and feel utterly helpless.

And even though "sitting around the table" is an easy thing to do, for many of us, it's an impossible thing to do peacefully.

While every house is slightly different, we all want the same thing for our kids:

Our goal as parents is to build healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime so our kids can get the nutrition they need from food.

And to do that, you need to know the strategies that work and how to react when things start to go south.

I've spent years studying this with experts, experimenting with my family, and implementing the strategies with thousands of other families in the MOMables community.

Meet Alex (today) the boy that started it all...

How long is too long to wait?

Right now, you might be thinking, "This all sounds interesting, I'll join in the next round - whenever that is."

Or perhaps you have a toddler, and you'd like to see if you could "just wait it out", hoping it's "just a phase."

I totally get where you're coming from. That said, the truth is that waiting even "just a few months" is a long time -and we all know that the longer our children stick to their habits, the harder they are to break.

I'll be perfectly honest. One of my biggest regrets is not getting the help I needed sooner, because by the time I did and began to see progress, I was filled with the inevitable "mom guilt."

The fact that you've made it this far tells me that you are searching for a better solution for your family, and that you are willing to put in the work needed to improve your meal times.

Let's get started!
