Everything Bagel Sandwich for School Lunch

When my kids start getting bored with regular sandwiches, I swap the bread for an everything bagel. It instantly makes lunch feel different without changing much else. The seasoning baked into the bagel adds plenty of flavor, so you don’t need a lot of condiments or fancy ingredients. Pair it with your favorite deli meat, cheese, and crisp veggies for a filling lunch that’s easy to customize with whatever you already have in the fridge.

Making It for Lunch

  1. Build the sandwich
Spread a thin layer of your favorite condiment on both bagel halves. Layer lettuce first, followed by the deli meat, cheese, and tomato before closing the sandwich. If you’re using tomatoes, place the lettuce and cheese between the bagel and the tomatoes to create a moisture barrier.
  2. Pack it for school
Slice the sandwich in half and pack it inside a sturdy lunch container. Add fruit, veggies, and other lunch sides separately. Refrigerate until it’s time to place the lunch inside an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack (if it’s hot).

Laura’s School Lunch Packing Tips

What’s the best meat for an everything bagel sandwich?

Turkey and ham are my go-to choices, but roast beef, chicken, chicken salad, and egg salad are all delicious on an everything bagel. Choose whatever your family already enjoys.

Which condiments taste best?

Because everything bagels already have so much flavor, I usually keep it simple with mayonnaise, mustard, or hummus. If you want to change things up, try guacamole or your favorite flavored cream cheese.

How do I keep the bagel from getting soggy?

Dry the lettuce well and use the lettuce and cheese as a barrier between the bagel and juicy ingredients like tomatoes. Pack any extra dressings or dips in a separate container.

Can I make this the night before?

Yes. Assemble the sandwich, refrigerate it overnight, and pack it in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack the next morning. It holds up very well when layered correctly.
