Learn how to assemble a drool-worthy everything bagel sandwich for school so the bagel doesn't get soggy and the lunch stays fresh for hours!

School Lunch Bagel
Sandwiches have always been a go-to for my kids when I need quick, easy-to-make, and filling lunch ideas. But when my teens get bored of the same ol’ sandwich routine, a bagel makes their school lunch feel unique, even when it’s a classic PBJ on a bagel.
Whether it's a classic turkey and cheese or something more indulgent like a crispy comforting BLT, an everything bagel sandwich instantly up your lunch game while making it more substantial and filling.
What to Put in an Everything Bagel Sandwich
You can find suggested ingredients in the recipe card below, but here are the essentials to making an everything bagel sandwich epic:
- Everything Bagel: it’s the seasoning on the bagel that adds flavor and takes the sandwich next level. I slice it in half and keep it fresh.
- Fillings: deli meats like ham and turkey, paired with cheese and veggies, are super convenient. For more protein, consider chicken salad or egg salad.
- Condiments: these ingredients are optional but will help bring all the flavors together for a deli-quality sandwich.

Best Condiments for an Everything Bagel Sandwich
I usually keep it simple with an everything bagel since there is already a lot of flavor there, but my go-to condiments to spread are mayo, hummus, and mustard. Just a little is all you need, but you can take it to the next level by spreading some guacamole.
How to Pack an Everything Bagel Sandwich for Lunch
Eat this bagel sandwich now check out these additional tips for keeping it fresh inside a lunch box for hours:
- Prep
Wash lettuce if using and dry it well so it doesn’t transfer moisture to your bagel and slice it in half. - Assemble sandwich
Spread a thin layer of your favorite condiments on both sides of the bagel. Use ingredients like lettuce and cheese to form a barrier between the bagel and any wet ingredients like tomatoes to prevent the juices from making it soggy. - Pack it for lunch
If you are making this sandwich the night before, keep it refrigerated until it’s time to go in a container. Then, pack it inside a lunch bag with an ice pack.

Lunch Packing Tips for Bagel Sandwiches
Here are a few helpful tips to ensure your everything bagel sandwich stays fresh if you are packing it in a lunch box for school:
Use the right container
The best way to pack a sandwich for lunch is to use a sturdy and durable container to prevent it from moving around or getting squished inside of the lunch bag.
Prevent soggy bagels
Pack sides separately so that no moisture reaches the sandwich; soggy bagels are the worst!
Keep it safe to eat
Consider adding an ice pack inside the lunch bag to regulate the temperature inside and keep the food fresh until it’s time to eat.
Make it more nutritious
Adding extra snacks like homemade banana chips and yogurt is a great way to feed teens who have larger appetites or require more energy for sports.
Keep condiments separate
If you added lots of veggies to your bagel sandwich and want to send some dip or dressing with the lunch, pack them inside a small lidded container and drizzle it at lunch.
Bagel Sandwich Lunch Sides
Including healthy sides with your bagel sandwich, like a fruit cup or hummus with carrots in a snack box, will add nutrition and bulk up this school lunch.
