Learn how to assemble this salami bagel sandwich and how to pack it so it tastes as awesome as when you made it!

Italian Salami Bagel Sandwich
It’s no surprise this Italian salami bagel sandwich is one of my daughter’s go-to school lunches! Bold flavors are definitely her thing, and since MY thing is keeping lunches fresh and not soggy, bagels deliver with the perfect chewy texture!
No bagels in the house? Tortillas have got your back! Sandwich wraps like a BLT wrap, and ham and veggie wrap are other alternatives to the same old sandwich routine that hold up well until lunchtime.
What You Need
Fresh ingredients make all the difference in this bagel sandwich. Exact amounts are in the recipe card below, but here are the basics plus some swaps:
- Bagel: a plain or sesame bagel works perfectly as a sturdy base, but you could also trade it in for a croissant if you like!
- Italian salami: nothing beats high-quality salami for a standout sandwich! My go-to is Genoa and can usually be found at the deli counter, but feel free to use your favorite deli variety.
- Provolone Cheese: for a creamy, mellow contrast to the bold flavor of the salami. Mozzarella or Swiss also pair really well with salami, if preferred.
- Cherry Tomatoes: for a burst of sweetness! You can also use regular tomato slices, sun-dried tomatoes or even roasted red peppers if tomatoes aren’t your thing.
- Arugula: adds a peppery bite and a vibrant pop of green. Swap it for spinach, mixed baby greens, or regular lettuce as a fresh substitute.
- Mustard (optional): gives everything a zesty kick! Not a fan? Swap in pesto or Italian dressing instead-just don't overdo it so you don’t end up with a soggy sandwich!
How to Make a Salami Bagel Sandwich
Whether you devour this bagel sandwich right away or pack it for later, these tips will ensure every bite is perfection!
- Assemble
Lightly spread mustard on one of the bagel halves. If you are using something with a milder flavor, such as mayo, you can put it on both halves. Start with a layer of salami, followed by provolone cheese. Add arugula and halved cherry tomatoes on top. Close the sandwich and press down slightly to secure it in place before cutting it in half. - Pack it for school
Place your salami bagel sandwich inside a hard lunch container and refrigerate until ready to use. Pack any lunch sides separately.

Bagel Sandwich Packing Tips for School Lunches
Follow these simple tips to keep your bagel sandwich tasting top-tier until the school lunch bell rings:
Toast the bagel
Bagels are heartier than most sandwich bread, but it will hold up even better over a few hours by slightly toasting it first. Let it cool completely before adding the fillings.
Separate sides
Pack any fruit, veggies, or crunchy snacks separately or in different compartments to keep moisture away from the sandwich.
Keep it cool
Consider adding an ice pack inside the lunch bag to regulate the temperature, especially when your bagel sandwich includes cheese or a mayo-based dressing.
Use the right container
Avoid flattened or squished sandwiches by packing them in a hard, sandwich-sized container.
