Some lunches are just extra satisfying, and a perfectly crispy, gooey sourdough grilled cheese is one of them! Learn how to pack it for school and keep that crunch for hours in the post below.

Easy Grilled Cheese on Sourdough Bread
If my oldest son's in the kitchen, there's a 90% chance he's making this easy grilled cheese on Sourdough bread. And let me tell you-that crispy, golden sourdough is a total game-changer. The tangy flavor and sturdy texture just make it better!
The best part? Grilled sandwiches like my healthy grilled veggie sandwich and toasty grilled ham and cheese hold up well in the lunchbox, making them perfect for school lunches. Bonus: they come together faster than you think!
What You Need
Three simple ingredients are all you need for this epic sourdough grilled cheese.
- Sourdough bread: sturdy and tangy! Sourdough holds up well for grilling and takes this grilled cheese from great to AMAZING!
- Cheese: I’m using cheddar because I love how sharp, melty, and ultra-cheesy it is, but plenty of other varieties work too! Think mozzarella, havarti, or anything that melts well.
- Butter: for that golden, crispy crust. Unsalted or salted both work.
How to Make a Sourdough Grilled Cheese
Here’s how to ensure this oh-so-easy grilled cheese turns out flawless every time:
- Assemble the sandwich
Place cheddar cheese on the sourdough bread slices, close and butter the outside. The butter gives it that perfect golden crunch! - Grill it
Heat a skillet over medium-low and grill the sandwich until the bread is golden brown and crispy on both sides, and the cheese is melted and oozy in the center. If you don’t want to use the stove, you can also air-fry grilled cheese! - Pack it for school
Let the sandwich cool completely before packing it in a hard lunch container. We want to prevent condensation from the steam so the bread stays crispy and not soggy. Keep any lunch sides, like fruit and veggies, separate.

Packing a Sourdough Grilled Cheese for School Lunch
With these simple packing tips for grilled sandwiches, that toasty crunch will still be there when lunchtime rolls around:
Use the right container
Pack the grilled cheese in a hard, lunch container no bigger than the sandwich to keep it from moving around and getting squished in the lunch bag.
Dip it!
Take this sandwich to the next level by packing some marinara into a small dip container so your child can dunk each crispy, melty bite at lunchtime!
Keep it cool
An ice pack helps prevent condensation and keeps chilled sides fresh, so don’t forget to toss one into the lunch bag when you leave for school.
Let it rest
Packing your sandwich too soon traps steam creating condensation and making bread soggy, so let it cool completely first!
