Thermos Lunch Recipe with Tomato Pasta Soup
This thermos recipe is every mom’s dream come true: a healthy and nutritious lunch that you can pack in 5 minutes… and it’s not a sandwich! We all love something between two slices of bread, but when you crave a non-sandwich lunch, a warm meal packed with good-for-you ingredients, nothing can beat a soup thermos lunch.
Yes, it sounds like more work for you, but quite the opposite, since this school lunch idea is a great way to use leftover pasta soup from dinner.
My go-to thermos recipes are this Creamy Tomato Tortellini Soup and this Veggie Tomato Soup, to which I often add cooked pasta to make it more filling. The pasta texture will be a bit softer at lunch, but should not be mushy!
Ok. We have an epic thermos lunch ahead, but how to keep it hot until lunchtime? That’s why I’m here, guys. Keep reading to learn all the tips for packing this tomato pasta soup in a thermos so your kid can enjoy a warm lunch when opening the lid!
What you need
Making healthy school lunches out of leftovers is my motto. Check how you can make this easy thermos recipe too, using what’s left from dinner:
- Soup: veggie soup or pasta soup.
- Cooked pasta: if you’re packing a soup without pasta, add ½ cup of your favorite pasta for a satisfying lunch.
- Raw veggies: whatever you have around and your kid enjoys eating!
- Ranch dressing: you can swap it for hummus or your favorite sauce for dipping veggies.

More tips for packing Tomato Pasta Soup for lunch
Follow these tips every time you pack a thermos recipe for school and it will stay warm until lunchtime:
Heat up the soup until pipping hot
Heating food to 212F is the #1 hack for packing thermos lunches that remain hot until lunch. You shouldn’t be able to taste the food without burning your mouth. Don’t worry, the soup will cool off enough by lunchtime so your kid can enjoy it.
Pick a good thermos
If you follow the steps I’m sharing, lunch should remain hot for 5 to 7 hours, depending on the thermos container. A double-insulated thermos is a great choice to keep food warm longer. Here are my top thermos picks for kids.
Add sides
Since this soup is loaded with veggies and pasta, bellies will be filled. But school lunch sides can be a fun way to sneak extra nutrition, so I usually pack thermos lunches with veggies and a dip. Make sure to pack them separately one from each other, so they remain intact until lunch.
Pack everything in the same lunch bag
You have a thermos container with warm soup and a lunchbox with cold veggies and dressing. No problem! You can pack hot and cold items in the same lunch bag, keeping them separated. If using an ice pack for the cold items, place it away from the thermos. You can also place a reusable napkin around the thermos so it’s separate from the cold items and your kid have something to wipe their hands with!
