These ham and cheese sliders are a kid-favorite lunchbox meal. Add some healthy sides, and you’ve got a healthy lunch for school!

Plus, with the tips in this post, you'll learn how to keep these ham and cheese sliders fresh inside a lunch bag for hours.

Mini Ham and Cheese Sandwich Sliders

Good things come in small packages, and these sliders are no exception!  In fact, one of the FEW things all three of my kids can agree on is how amazing they are. Add some nutritious sides and you have a healthy lunch that everyone can be happy about.

Whether I jazz things up with different types of cheese or add some pineapple, just like in these Hawaiian Sliders, these mini sandwiches are always a hit!

What You Need

Just a few ingredients and a couple of minutes is all you need to put these sliders together! Ready?

  • Dinner Rolls: Classic soft, white slider buns or maybe even try a Hawaiian roll for a touch of sweetness.
  • Mayonnaise: (optional) for a creamy texture.
  • Deli meat: I’m using ham for this recipe, but turkey will also make a delicious slider.
  • Cheese: I love cheddar but there are so many different cheeses out there that will taste amazing with these so use your favorite. Think – Swiss, Colby, provolone, etc.

How to Make Ham and Cheese Lunchbox Sliders

Making mini sliders is just as easy as making a sandwich, just smaller! Here’s how to put them together:

  1. Assemble
Slice bread in half, spread mayo on both sides of the bun and layer on your deli meat. That’s it! You can toast it if you want the cheese to get nice and melty.
  2. Pack it for lunch
After eating one immediately (because who wouldn’t?) pack the rest of the sliders in a lunch container. Pack healthy sides like fruit and veggies separately and include an ice pack to keep everything cool.

Keeping Mini Sandwiches Fresh in the Lunchbox

Here are some tips to pack sandwiches so they will stay fresh until lunchtime, even mini lunchbox sliders!

Use the right container
Zip bags are handy, but they don’t keep your sandwich safe from getting squished by other items in your lunch bag. To keep lunch from getting messy, I recommend using a sturdy lunch container with compartments that aren’t much bigger than the sandwiches.

Keep it safe
If your sandwich has ingredients that need to stay cold, throw in an ice pack or two inside the lunch bag. You can also pack a frozen water bottle or juice box with the sandwich. Bonus: a nice cold drink to enjoy with lunch!

Keep wet ingredients separate
Make sure to keep fruits, veggies, and any other wet foods in their own compartment or container. This way, your bread stays nice and fresh until it’s time to eat!

DIY Assembly
Like those sub sandwich Lunchables, kids love to assemble their own lunches. You can do this with this lunch by packing the bread rolls, sliced in half, and fillings separately.

More Ways to Pack a Ham Sandwich for a School Lunch

If you live in a ham-loving household (like I do) and frequently make school lunches with ham, try switching things up with this toasted ham sandwich or grilled ham and cheese. Add some healthy snacks like homemade potato chips or a fun fruit rainbow skewer to round out the lunch. You’ve got this!
