Cheese and Salami Sandwich
Growing up, I always loved finding salchichón (Spain's version of salami) in my lunchbox. The deli-style flavors of this Salami and Cheese Sandwich feel like such a comforting, childhood treat. Sometimes, simple lunch ideas are the best ideas!
If making deli-style sandwiches is your thing, you’ll definitely want to include my turkey pepperoni sandwich and my roast beef and veggie wrap into your lunch rotation!
Ingredients
You'll find the details of the recipe at the bottom of this post; but before you stack those salami slices between your bread, Here’s why each ingredient makes this sandwich a go-to:
- Bread: use your favorite sandwich bread or even a sandwich roll.
- Salami: you can request it to be sliced in the deli or purchase a salami sausage and slice it at home. Genoa is often most popular.
- Cheese: I personally love pairing salami with sliced Gouda, Cheddar, or even Manchego.
- Mayonnaise: the flavors in this sandwich are strong enough to stand on their own, but mayo adds a nice creamy texture and helps keep the ingredients in place. You can also use mustard instead. My older kids love dijon and stone-ground with salami and cheese.
- Lettuce (optional): for a fresh crunch to balance out the heavier ingredients.
How to Pack a Salami and Cheese Sandwich for Lunch
Some tips that help keep this sandwich with cheese and salami stay fresh when packed for school in a lunch box include:
- Start with the spread
Spread mayonnaise on both slices of bread to create a creamy base that holds everything together. - Layer it up
Place a piece of lettuce on one slice of bread, then top with salami and cheese. The lettuce creates a barrier and helps keep the bread from getting soggy. - Pack it for school
Slice the salami and cheese sandwich in half and place it in a compartmentalized lunch container packing lunch sides, like fruit and nuts, separately. Keep refrigerated until ready for school.

Tips to Keep This School Lunch Fresh
You can make this sandwich in the morning and pack it inside a lunch box to be enjoyed later for lunch. Here are some tips to ensure success:
Use the right container
Ziplock bags are convenient but often result in a flattened sandwich. Packing it in a hard, sandwich-sized container will prevent that from happening.
Pack Sides Separately
Keep fruits and veggies separate to prevent moisture from reaching the sandwich. This is also the best way to keep produce staying crisp and fresh.
Layer correctly
Use dry ingredients like lettuce or cheese to create a barrier of protection so wet fillings like tomatoes don’t make the bread soggy.
Dry your Lettuce
If using lettuce, make sure it's completely dry before adding it to the sandwich to avoid damp bread.
Keep It Safe to Eat
If you're making this ahead of time, keep it in the fridge until you're ready to leave. Add an ice pack to keep everything inside the lunch bag cool and fresh.
