Below, you’ll learn how to make this delicious salami sandwich roll in minutes plus tips to keep it fresh inside a packed lunch.

Sandwich Roll with Salami and Cheese
Childhood nostalgia meets deli delicious with this epic salami and cheese roll! Anytime I pack it for my son, I'm tempted to make another one for myself. It’s an easy lunch idea that comes together in just 5 minutes-whether he packs it or I do!
Other deli-style faves that keep my kids coming home with empty lunch boxes include this bagel BLT and roast beef wrap! Add some fresh fruits and veggies and you’ve got a balanced meal ready to go.
Ingredients
This sandwich roll is a favorite in my house. You can find specific measurements in the recipe card below, but here’s a rundown of how I put it together:
- Roll: use your favorite fresh roll to give this lunch that "deli-made" feel.
- Salami: you can either get it pre-sliced from the deli or slice a salami sausage at home. Genoa is a popular choice.
- Cheese: Salami pairs great with most cheeses. My favorites are Gouda, Cheddar, and Manchego.
- Mayo: adds a creamy texture and helps hold the ingredients together. Swap it for mustard if your kids don’t care for mayo. My older kids enjoy dijon or stone-ground mustard with salami and cheese.
- Lettuce (optional): for a fresh crunch to lighten up the heavier ingredients.
How to Pack a Salami Sandwich Roll for Lunch
Here are some assembly tips that will ensure this salami roll is a success, whether you eat it at home or pack it for school to enjoy later:
- Start with the spread
Slice the roll in half and spread mayo on both sides to help hold everything in place. - Layer ingredients
Add a piece of lettuce on one side, followed by the salami and cheese. The lettuce acts as a barrier to prevent soggy bread. - Pack it for school
Place your salami cheese roll inside a hard lunch container to prevent it from getting squished. Keep any healthy sides separate, and refrigerate everything until ready for school.

Tips to Keep this School Lunch Fresh
Keep that salami sandwich roll with cheese lunchtime-ready and tasting stellar with these additional tips:
Use the right container
When packing a sandwich, it’s best to ditch the ziplock bag and invest in a hard, sandwich-sized container to ensure everything stays fresh and intact until lunch.
Layer correctly
Stacking smart is key! Place drier ingredients like lettuce or cheese as a barrier between bread and juicy fillings like tomatoes to avoid sogginess.
Keep food safe
Placing an ice pack inside the lunch bag helps maintain temperature inside and this keeps the food safe until it’s time to eat.
Pack Sides Separately
Keep fruits and veggies separate to prevent moisture from reaching the sandwich. This is the best way to keep produce crisp and your sandwich dry!
