Learn the shortcuts that make this BLT salad a quick and easy school lunch idea and the tips for keeping it fresh for hours!

BLT Salad for School Lunch
This BLT salad is pure magic even for the non-salad eaters. The unbeatable combo of crunchy lettuce, salty bacon bits, and juicy tomatoes gets taken up a notch by adding avocado and a hard-boiled egg for protein.
Like the BLT wrap and BLT sandwich, this flavor combo never goes out of style. Pack a little homemade ranch in a small container for dressings and you’ve got a winning lunch!
This is a winning lunch idea my teen loves because she can pack it ahead herself.
Ingredients
Here is what you need to make this healthy and satisfying salad and some shortcuts you can take:
- Romaine Lettuce: Crunchy and refreshing, you can wash it and store it ready to go in the fridge for a few days.
- Tomatoes: Use cherry tomatoes or sliced fresh tomatoes for this salad.
- Bacon: Cooked until crispy and crumbled or use bacon bits instead.
- Avocado: A nutritious ingredient that elevates this salad.
- Cheese: I love mozzerella, but it can be swapped out for any favorite, like feta, cheddar, goat, etc.
- Dressing: drizzle it with Ranch, a Balsamic Vinaigrette or Avocado Lime dressing.
How to Pack a BLT Salad for Lunch
Here are a few tips in each step that make packing a salad for lunch a breeze in the morning or the night before for a stress-free start to your day.
- Prep
Use my pro tip to microwave bacon to crispy perfection in 2-minutes while you make the salad. Chop the lettuce the night before. - Make the salad
Layer the ingredients inside a salad lunchbox container. Some let you separate the wet ingredients and you can mix them up right before serving. - Pack the dressing
Pour some dressing into a small lidded container to be drizzled on just before eating. - Pack for lunch
Pack your lunch sides separately and keep everything in the fridge until it’s time to put everything inside an insulated or uninsulated bag with an ice pack.

How to Pack Salad Dressing for Lunch
The key to packing salad dressings for lunch and preventing soggy salads is to use a small leak-proof container and pack it separately from the salad.
School Lunch Packing Tips for Salads
Here are my top tips for packing the ultimate BLT salad and keeping it fresh from prep time to lunchtime!
Use the right container
A sturdy, leak-proof container with separate compartments will ensure everything stays fresh and amazing until it's time to chow down! These lunch containers are THE BEST for packing salads!
Prevent soggy lettuce
Place an ice pack or two inside the lunch bag to regulate the temperature inside so the lettuce stays crisp.
Keep ingredients crispy
Let the bacon cool completely before adding it on top of the lettuce and put the lid on the container so steam doesn’t build up inside.
Add extra protein
Adding hardboiled eggs, deli meat, or chickpeas can bulk up this salad with extra protein and make it more filling, especially for teens who play sports and need a filling lunch.
Add nutrition
Snacks and healthy sides like fruit, yogurt, or a homemade granola bar can add vitamins, more protein, and keep kids full longer.
