With a buttery-crisp grilled bread and filled with warm chocolate hazelnut spread, this grilled Nutella sandwich is a chocolate lover’s dream!

While a bit indulgent, my kids go nuts for a gooey grilled Nutella sandwich. Learn how to make it and enjoy it at home or pack it for school and keep it crispy inside a lunch box for hours!

Can You Grill a Nutella Sandwich?

Absolutely! The simple act of grilling the classic Nutella sandwich will make it even more irresistible! What’s not to love about biting through a crunchy golden crust to find a warm Nutella center? So yum.

This one and the grilled PB&J are two of my son’s favorites that I sometimes send to school as a fun treat. With the following tips, you’ll pack it too and keep it tasty and intact until lunch.

What You Need

This simple sandwich is a snap to put together with only three necessary ingredients:

  • Bread: any sliced sandwich bread. Hearty whole wheat or multigrain bread is sturdier and helps prevent sogginess while adding additional nutrients and fiber.
  • Hazelnut Spread: also known as Nutella or make this nut-free Nutella.
  • Butter: or spray for grilling.

How to Make a Grilled Nutella Sandwich

Some tips for achieving a flawless grilled Nutella sandwich and keeping it fresh until lunch include:

  1. Make the Nutella sandwich
Make it on fresh bread, no need to toast it first.
  2. Butter both sides
Room temperature butter is easier to spread on fresh bread. You could also use spray in a pinch.
  3. Grill it
Heat a non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the sandwich on the pan. Grill it until golden on one side and then on the other side.
  4. Pack for school
If you're not planning on eating this sandwich immediately, let it cool completely before packing it in a lunchbox or container.  Don't skip this step! This prevents steam from building up and will help your bread stay nice and crispy.

Packing Grilled Sandwiches for Lunch

If your kids enjoy the buttery crunch of a grilled sandwich, consider these additional tips for packing grilled sandwiches for school:

Use a sturdy container
Storing the sandwich in a sturdy lunch container will prevent it from getting squished inside the lunch bag.

Avoid a soggy sandwich by letting the grilled sandwich cool down completely after you grill it. It will still hold its crunch but won’t get soggy from the condensation trapped in the container.

Keep ingredients separate
Pack healthy sides in a separate compartment, container, or smaller snack box. This will keep the sandwich fresh and the other ingredients intact.

Make it nutritious
While the hazelnuts in the spread contain magnesium and potassium, this lunch is by no means healthy. To make it more nutritionally balanced, include a side of veggies and fruit with the lunch.

Pack it right
Remember to include an ice pack in the lunch bag if you have other items that need to stay cool, such as cheese and yogurt.

Get creative
For a fun twist, try adding sliced fruit and turning it into a Banana and Nutella sandwich, a Strawberry Nutella sandwich, or an Apple and Nutella sandwich.

More Grilled Sandwiches

Now that you’ve mastered making these and know you can send a grilled sandwich to school add some variety to the rotation with a grilled chicken pesto sandwich, grilled turkey and cheese, or even taco grilled cheese!
