Nutella Sandwich with Strawberries for School Lunch

If it was up to my son, he’d eat a Nutella sandwich daily. Sometimes, after school, he’ll drizzle a little, about a teaspoon, over sliced apples. And because he is a pretty good eater and typically packs a healthy lunch for school, now and then, I’ll make him this strawberry Nutella sandwich as a treat.

If your kid goes to a nut-free school, you can make this nut-free Nutella at home and then use it to make grilled nutella sandwiches or these PB & Nutella rollups and use a nut-free alternative for peanut butter as a swap.

What You Need for this Lunch

Making this sandwich is similar to making a peanut butter and fresh strawberry sandwich but with a chocolate spread. You’ll need:

  • Bread: Choose your favorite sandwich bread-white, whole wheat, or gluten-free - to hold everything together.
  • Nutella: use your favorite brand, make it at home, or any chocolate spread will work. Some reduced sugar ones are available.
  • Strawberries: naturally sweet and a great way to add fruit to the lunch. Add them sliced or mash them with a fork for a jam-like consistency.

How to Make a Nutella Strawberry Sandwich

This sandwich is as simple as it gets! You can make it and eat it now or use these tips to pack it for lunch inside a lunch box:

  1. Prep the strawberries

Slice them thinly if your child likes some texture, or mash them with a fork for a smoother jelly-like filling.
  2. Make the sandwich
Spreading the Nutella on both slices of bread and slightly away from the edges helps keep the strawberries in place and ensures that the nutella doesn’t ooze out.
  3. Pack it for lunch
If packing it for school, you can prevent the sandwich from getting squished by packing it inside a sturdy lunch container.

School Lunch Packing Tips for Nutella Sandwiches

Nutella sandwiches are gooey, delicious, and a kid-favorite item to find inside a school lunch. Some tips to keep the sandwich and the lunch sides fresh for hours inside a lunch bag include:

Avoid melted Nutella
Add an ice pack or two inside the lunch bag to regulate the temperature inside and keep everything appealing to eat.

Prevent squished sandwiches
While zip bags are convenient, they’re not the best for soft sandwiches since they easily get smashed by the other items inside.

Add Protein
Pack a yogurt with the lunch or some hard-boiled eggs inside a container as a side to add 6 to 15 g of protein to this meal.

Make it Nutritious
A side of veggies and hummus or additional fruit with the lunch will balance out this meal. Remember to pack them inside a separate container to prevent leaks.

More Sandwiches with Fruit

If fruit is a winner with your kid, try this peanut butter and apple sandwich, a grilled cheese and apple sandwich, or these Hawaiian ham and cheese sliders.

Ingredients

  • 3 strawberries
  • 2 slices sandwich bread, your favorite
  • 2 tablespoons Nutella

Instructions

Prep the berries:

  • Wash the fresh berries, remove the stem, and slice them into ¼ inch thin slices. Alternatively, you can mash them with a fork in a bowl.

Make the sandwich:

  • Spread Nutella on both slices of bread.
  • Place the strawberry slices on one side and close the sandwich. Spreading Nutella on both sides will prevent the strawberries from sliding out.

Pack it for lunch:

  • Place the Nutella strawberry sandwich in a lunch container where it fits snugly. Pack any sides, like fruits and veggies, in a separate compartment or container. Refrigerate until ready to pack inside a lunch bag, with or without an ice pack.
