Making your own trail mix with dried fruit at home is simple and it's easy to customize!

I love adding this dried fruit trail mix inside my kids’ snack box or as a side for lunch because it’s ready in 5 minutes and it keeps for a month!

Healthy Fruit Trail Mix with Banana Chips

This homemade trail mix with dried fruit brings me back to my high school days when my friends and I used to buy frozen yogurt from a natural health food store after school and they had an impressive selection of bulk toppings.

Back then, we’d make our own trail mix without measuring bagging whatever we liked. And today? I keep making it because it’s a great snack to pack for school, to enjoy at home, in the car between school and sports.

And since it keeps at room temperature, you can stash a zip baggie filled with it in your bag and have a good-for-you snack to enjoy while you’re sitting in carline too!

Years later, I’ve learned the right fruit-to-nut ratio, and I share all that with you below!

Ingredients

This trail mix is not just about the flavor but also the texture! Epic combo. You’ll find the ingredients amounts in the recipe card below, but first, check what I included:

  • Banana chips: they’re sweet, affordable, have fiber and kids love them! You can buy them or make homemade banana chips.
  • Dried fruit: in this recipe, I’m using mango, strawberries, and blueberries. You can use your favorites always ensuring to keep the ratios in check.
  • Nuts: I always have almonds in my pantry and use them as the base because their neutral flavor pairs perfectly with dried fruit. You can swap for your favorite nuts or seeds.

How to Make Dried Fruit Trail Mix

I can’t think of anything easier than a one-step recipe! So this is all you have to do to make your own trail mix with dried fruit at home:

  1. Mix
Mix ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. Store
Store in an airtight container or sealed bag for up to 1 month

Ok, how easy was that? By the way, you can also update your snack rotation with my No-Bake Oatmeal Raisin Energy Balls recipe.

Dried Fruit to Nut Ratio for Trail Mix

After lots of attempts, I’ve found that the right trail mix ratio is 2 parts dried fruit and 1 part nuts. Dried fruits are sweet and provide fiber, many vitamins, and antioxidants, while nuts are rich in healthy fats and add some protein, as well as fiber. This 2:1 ratio is sweet enough and filling enough where a serving is just right!

Storing Homemade Trail Mix

What I love about this trail mix, other than it’s delicious, is that I often pre-measure a few snack bags after mixing it, and the rest I keep in an airtight container in the pantry for up to 1 month.

How to Pack This Snack for School

One of the reasons we all love trail mix is that it’s easy to enjoy everywhere! It makes a perfect after-school snack kids can eat by itself or mixed with milk or yogurt. If you want to pack it for school with something extra, like fruit and veggies, place it in a separate container or compartment so it doesn’t absorb moisture.
