Homemade Lunchables for Older Kids
I totally get the struggle of finding lunch ideas that are both nutritious and something your kids actually want to eat. Enter: homemade lunchables. They're way better than the store-bought versions, made with fresh ingredients, and come together in no time.
The best part? You can tweak the portions to fit your kid's appetite-I know my kids need way more fuel than when they were little! Like this Protein Lunchable and my Healthy Lunchable Tacos, this DIY lunchable fills up my older kids and is the perfect balance of nutrition and convenience.
What Goes in a Homemade Lunchable
Each easy-to-make lunchable has cheese, meat, crackers, and fruit, and of course, you can customize it. Here is how:
- Cheddar Cheese: Easy to pack and easy to eat, cheese adds calcium and protein. You can swap this for any other cheese.
- Ham or Turkey: Lean protein helps make this lunch filling and flavorful. Opt for a nitrate-free or low-sodium version for a healthier option.
- Whole-Grain Crackers: Choose whole grains to keep your child full and focused. Gluten-free options work great, too.
- Fresh Fruit: Adds vitamins and natural sweetness. Think grapes, apple slices, or berries.
How to Pack a Filling Lunchable for School
Follow these tips to assemble this school lunch in minutes and keep it fresh until lunchtime:
- Prep the Protein
Start by rolling up your deli ham or turkey, then slice it into bite-sized pieces and place it in a compartment of your lunch container. - Cut Cheese
Slice cheese into pieces that will stack well with the crackers. - Add Fruit
Use your favorite fresh fruit, or try these homemade strawberry fruit roll-ups (like the ones in the photo) for a fun twist! - Pack for lunch
Pack each component in its own compartment and refrigerate until ready to pack for school.

Tips to Keep School Lunches Fresh
Packing homemade lunchables correctly is key to keeping it fresh, especially the texture of the food intact. One of my kids won't eat cheese unless the texture is just right, so I'm sharing the best ways to keep it all fresh even if it won’t be eaten for hours after prep:
Choose the right container
A well-sealed container with separate compartments is key to prevent everything from getting squashed in a lunch bag.
Avoid Slimy Cheese
I’ll often freeze the sliced cheese or cheese sticks to prevent that slimy cheese texture that happens when it warms up.
Keep It Safe to Eat:
Lunches with deli meats and cheese need an ice pack to regulate the temperature inside the lunch bag and maintain the integrity of the food.
Save time
Prep the meat, cheese, and fruit in advance for the whole week and store them in the fridge for quick assembly in the morning.
