Homemade Lunchable with Chicken Nuggets

You can skip the flashy yellow prepackaged boxes. I've got a simple homemade lunchable with chicken nuggets that's just as exciting and with better-for-you ingredients! My youngest loves this fun lunch idea – plus he’s always up for helping me put it together.

To go with the nuggets, add some fruit and veggies for a boost of nutrition to round it all out, and you’re good to go. Don't forget to save a few nuggets to try this game-changing chicken nugget wrap.

What You Need

You can find the exact amounts for this chicken nugget lunchable in the recipe card below, or you can get creative and customize it with the ingredients your kids love most:

  • Carrot Sticks: amazing for crunch, color and vitamins! You can swap them for bell peppers if preferred.
  • Celery Sticks: for crunch and hydration. If celery isn't a favorite, try cucumber sticks instead.
  • Strawberries: always a kid-favorite in my house and a great source of vitamin C. Any fresh fruit will do, so feel free to switch it up!
  • Chicken Nuggets: use frozen nuggets for quick prep or make your own for a healthier option.
  • Dipping sauce: chicken nuggets deserve a delicious dipping sauce, like BBQ Sauce, Ketchup, or Homemade Ranch!

Homemade or Frozen Nuggets

Making your own chicken nuggets is a great way to avoid unnecessary additives and sodium, but hey, frozen nuggets are just as awesome on busy days and still pack a solid protein punch! Just follow the reheating instructions on the bag, and you're all set! Both options will work perfectly for this lunch.

How to Make a Chicken Nuggets Lunchable

Whether you’re serving up this chicken nugget creation at home or packing it for school, these simple tips will keep it fresh and lunchbox-worthy all day!

  1. Reheat nuggets
Reheat your nuggets in the microwave or toaster. They'll be at room temperature by lunch but no less delicious.
  2. Assemble lunchable
Place the carrot and celery sticks on one side of a lunch container with compartments and the chicken nuggets on the other. Keep juicy ingredients like fruit in a different compartment to prevent a soggy lunch.
  3. Dipping sauce
Add dipping sauce in a small container with a lid and pack it separately to prevent spills.
  4. Pack it for school
Make sure to refrigerate your lunch along with any healthy sides until you're ready to head out the door.

School Lunch Packing Tips

With these additional tips, you can make this chicken nugget lunchable in the morning and keep it at its best throughout the school day:

Use the right container
When packing a bento box or lunchable, the right container will make the difference between squished and soggy, or fresh and amazing! These durable bento containers with compartments are my faves!

Keep it chilled
Consider adding an ice pack to ensure everything is safe to eat by the time noon rolls around. This is especially important if lunch bags are kept outside for long periods.

Make portions and size appropriate
More filling lunchables can be made for older kids by adjusting the amount of food included or adding on things like boiled eggs to help keep them full.

Prevent Soggyness
Make sure to pack sauces or condiments in a separate, small, leak-proof container so the nuggets stay dry and your lunch bag stays clean.

More Mom-Made Alternatives to Lunchables

The best part about healthy lunchable alternatives like this picnic bento lunch and rainbow snack box? I can mix and match my son’s favorite ingredients! When he needs more, this filling protein lunchable or egg and turkey bistro box keeps him powered up.

Depends. You can leave it out and just use less of the mixture per serving, but it might not be as satisfying to shake with so little! You can use a dairy-free/vegan “parmesan” cheese, although many are nut-based, so might be a problem for a nut-free school or classroom.

    Hello,

I am wondering where you got the containers with separate food compartments? I am looking to get some for my daughter for school.

    Thanks!
