This ham and avocado wrap is a filling, quick lunch made with ingredients you probably already have. Here, you'll learn how to roll it tightly, keep the avocado fresh, and pack it so it holds together until lunchtime.

Ham and Avocado Wrap for Lunch

My daughter is obsessed with ham sandwiches, and she started packing this wrap to make her high school lunches more filling. The mashed avocado adds creaminess to the wrap without needing mayo, while the ham and lettuce bulk it up. If you’re out of avocados, guacamole works just as well.

Packing It for Lunch

  1. Mash the avocado
Mash the avocado and season with salt and pepper, if desired.
  2. Assemble
Spread the avocado over the tortilla, add the spinach, and layer the ham on top. Fold in the sides and roll the tortilla tightly, burrito-style.
  3. Pack for lunch
Place the wrap snugly inside a lunch container with fruit and veggies in separate compartments. Refrigerate until ready to place it inside an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack, if needed.

Laura’s School Lunch Packing Tips

Will the avocado turn brown?

Eventually, yes, but wrapping it inside the tortilla with the spinach and ham minimizes its exposure to air, which is what causes avocado to brown. It may darken a little by lunchtime, but much more slowly than avocado left exposed.

Can I make this wrap the night before?

Yes. Assemble it, roll it tightly, and refrigerate it in a sealed lunch container. Leaving the wrap whole overnight also helps keep the avocado tucked away from the air.

How do I keep the wrap from falling apart?

Don't overfill it. Fold the sides inward and roll tightly while tucking the ingredients into the tortilla, then pack it in a container where it fits snugly. Read this post on how to make a wrap.

Watch How It’s Made:

Ingredients

  • ¼ avocado, mashed
  • 1 large flour tortilla
  • Handful fresh spinach
  • 2 ounces sliced deli ham

Instructions

Prep

  • Mash the avocado and season with salt and pepper, if desired.

Assemble

  • Spread the mashed avocado over the tortilla. Top with spinach and ham, fold in the sides, and roll tightly burrito-style.

Pack for Lunch

  • Place the wrap in a lunch container with fruit and veggies packed separately. Refrigerate until ready to place inside an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack, if needed.

Notes

The avocado will eventually brown, but keeping it rolled inside the tortilla limits its exposure to air and slows the process. Guacamole can also be used in place of mashed avocado.
