Bologna Sandwich with Swiss Cheese

What's more classic (and budget-friendly) than a bologna sandwich? It's a comforting and simple school lunch, but when my older kids ask for it again, I often give it an easy glow-up by adding creamy Swiss cheese! Feels fancier already, right?

You can also turn up the flavor and fry it like this fried bologna sandwich. My son convinced me to try it-delish! Once you start upgrading old-school staples, like this ham and cheese croissant or PB&J bagel sandwich you won’t be able to stop!

Ingredients

You only need a few simple ingredients to make this bologna sandwich making it super easy to customise if you want to add or swap out anything:

  • Bread: any sandwich bread works fine, but a hearty whole-grain will add extra fiber.
  • Mayo: keeps the bread soft and adds that creamy classic flavor. Substitute with mustard or even hummus for a heartier alternative.
  • Bologna: a nostalgic taste that's easy on the budget. If possible, choose quality slices (usually found behind the deli counter) for the best flavor.
  • Swiss Cheese: I’m using Swiss to give this sandwich a more distinct flavor and add that little ‘something extra,’ but you could easily swap it for cheddar or American for a more familiar taste.

How to Make a Bologna Swiss Sandwich

Making sandwiches seems obvious, but there are some tips for putting together this simple but upgraded bologna and cheese that will keep it fresh until lunchtime:

  1. Spread Mayo
Lightly coat each bread slice with mayo. This helps keep the bread from drying out.
  2. Layer It Up
If adding lettuce, layer it first to create a moisture barrier between the bread and other ingredients. Then layer on the bologna and Swiss cheese to create a simple and tasty sandwich.
  3. Pack it for school
Slice in half, and place it in a hard, sandwich-sized container, keeping any healthy lunch sides separate. Refrigerate everything until ready for school.

Keeping It Fresh Until Lunch

Packing sandwiches for lunch is simple, and with these additional tips, you can ensure your bologna and Swiss stays fresh until lunchtime:

Use the right container
A durable, sandwich-sized container will prevent this sandwich from getting squished in a busy backpack.

Keep it chilled
To keep everything cool, add an ice pack to the lunch bag. This is especially helpful for keeping the cheese fresh until lunch.

Add more nutrition
Including some healthy sides will help bulk up the nutrition of this lunch; think berries, sliced apples, apple chips, banana chips, or a fruit salad.

Separate wet and dry ingredients
When adding fruits and veggies to this school lunch, keep the produce separate so everything stays crisp and fresh and moisture doesn’t reach the sandwich making it soggy.

More School Lunch Sandwich Ideas

If your kids love this leveled-up bologna and cheese classic, I’ve got you covered with other easy upgrades like a BLT bagel sandwich and apple grilled cheese. Or grab a tortilla and make a crispy chicken wrap or ham and avocado wrap-quick, tasty, and never boring!
