Barbeque Chicken Wrap

Delicious chicken mixed with barbecue sauce inside a tortilla: no kid can resist this terrific BBQ Chicken Wrap for THE perfect school lunch! Moms can’t ask for more: it´s a healthy and tasty meal you can make with chicken leftovers in 5 minutes!

Cooked chicken breasts, thighs, or rotisserie chicken meat will do the trick in this recipe. You just have to chop it into small pieces with a knife or shredded as I explain in this post. All you need is ½ cup of chicken per wrap so it’s perfect for putting leftovers to use.

And if you’re drooling in front of the screen, you may need some extra chicken to make wraps for you too 😉 I’m telling you that you can turn that plain chicken into an irresistible wrap by adding your favorite BBQ sauce to the mix. Spicy, smoky, sweet, hickory…. anything goes!

What is in BBQ Chicken Wrap

To make this delicious lunch, you need cooked chicken, like leftovers from dinner, and a few basic ingredients. So simple, so good!

Check that you have:

  • Cooked chicken: you can use chicken breast, chicken thighs, or rotisserie chicken. Chop it into small pieces with a knife or shredded it.
  • BBQ sauce: use your favorite.
  • Lettuce leaves: to hold the filling and add fiber.
  • Tortilla: the large ones, any type, regular, gluten-free or even spinach tortillas work!
  • Fruit & veggies: add what you have on hand for extra nutrition.

You’ll find the measurements in the recipe card below.

How to pack BBQ Chicken Wrap for lunch

You can prep an epic lunch in 5 minutes and pack it for lunch without any mess by following this simple step-by-step.

Here´s how I made this wrap for lunch:

  1. Mix chicken and sauce
In a medium bowl, combine the chopped or shredded cooked chicken with the bbq sauce. Mix it until all the chicken has been coated with it.
  2. Prep the base
Place the tortilla on a flat surface and layer a couple of lettuce leaves on top.
  3. Add the filling
Scoop the bbq chicken mixture on top of the lettuce, placing it in the middle of the tortilla.
  4. Make the wrap!
Fold in the two sides and then one end over the chicken salad, rolling it tightly into a wrap. Slice in half.
  5. Pack it for lunch
Place the chicken wrap inside the main compartment of a lunchbox along with some fruit and veggies. Cover with the lid and refrigerate until ready to pack inside a lunch bag with or without an ice pack.

More Tips for Packing Wraps for Lunch

Pack chicken wraps for lunch following these tips and your kid will enjoy an appealing and healthy meal every time.

Save time
Chicken leftovers are one of my hacks to prep healthy lunches for the entire family. Shred chicken leftovers and store in the fridge or the freezer to use whenever you need them for salads, thermos soups, or some of these epic school lunches with chicken salad.

Prevent tortilla from drying out
If you make wraps for school lunch ahead, tortilla could dry out. To prevent this, cover it with a damp paper towel and refrigerate it. This is particulary important if you´re using gluten-free tortillas, since they tend to dry out quicker than traditional flour tortillas.

Add more nutrition
Pack this BBQ Chicken Wrap in a separate compartment along with your kid’s favorite fruits and veggies, like carrots, bell pepper strips, celery sticks, snaps peas, cherry tomatoes, berries, grapes, orange slices, tangerine segments, and the list goes on!

Snacks are allowed!
Snacks are always a terrific way to add more nutrition and variety to the lunchbox in a way kids enjoy eating. Some tasty ideas? These No-Bake Chocolate Brownie Energy Bites, these Banana Chips, or these Homemade Doritos!
