Lettuce Lunch Wrap with Turkey and Avocado
My high schooler went through a phase where she packed this turkey and avocado lettuce wrap for lunch on repeat. I didn’t mind since it’s a healthy lunch idea that kept her full and had plenty of protein.
She describes this lunch as a salad with deli turkey but without needing utensils! This wrap is one she added to her turkey lunches rotation, along with this Spinach Lunch Wrap with Turkey and Hummus, a simple turkey lettuce wrap (when we’re out of avocado), and a close favorite, the Grilled Turkey Sandwich.
Ingredients
This Lettuce Wrap is packed with flavor and simple to make. Here's a closer look at the ingredients and possible swaps:
- Lettuce: cobb or Boston Bibb work best since romaine has the stems that don't roll. But, if you want to use romaine you can leave them laying flat like I did with these BLT lettuce wraps.
- Tomatoes: adds freshness and a burst of juicy flavor. Slice them thin for easier rolling. Cherry tomatoes will also work, just slice them into small rounds.
- Deli Turkey: a great source of lean protein. You can also use ham or grilled chicken.
- Avocado: creamy avocado adds filling, healthy fats. To decrease browning, you can substitute guacamole, which browns slower (especially store-bought).
- Cheese: A slice of your favorite cheese adds creaminess. Cheddar, provolone, or Swiss all work.
- Mustard: I’m using mustard because my kids like it, but a zesty ranch would also taste amazing with this wrap.
- Pickles: tangy and delicious! Want the added crunch but don’t like pickles? Give cucumbers a try.

How to Make an Avocado Lettuce Wrap with Turkey
Making wraps for lunch is a quick and easy lunch solution that’s perfect for busy mornings. Some additional tips in the steps for making for this lettuce wrap include:
- Make a bed of lettuce.
Double up on the leaves so they're sturdy enough to hold the fillings and place them flat on the counter. - Layer strategically: Start by placing your thin tomato slices, then top with turkey to anchor them in place. Next, add avocado and layer the cheese on top to keep it from sliding out. Finally, you’re going to add pickles and drizzle a small amount of mustard on top.
- Wrap it up: Roll the lettuce leaves tightly to keep all the ingredients tucked inside. Remember, if using romaine, you can leave them as lettuce cups for an easier option.
- Pack it for school
Cut the wrap in half and place it in a glass container with a lid. Pack any lunch sides separately and keep refrigerated until ready for school.
Keep the Wrap Fresh Until School Lunch
These lettuce wraps can be prepped ahead of time and packed inside a lunch box to grab and go later. Here are some additional tips to make sure it stays fresh and delicious until ready to eat:
Pack it for lunch
Wraps are too fragile for a ziplock bag. Use a hard lunch container that fits the wrap snugly to prevent it from sliding around or getting squished inside a lunch bag.
Prevent a wilted wrap
If your lettuce tends to wilt before you can make those epic wraps, don't miss these tips for storing lettuce to keep it fresh!
Slow down avocado from browning
Although the avocado will brown, holding off on slicing the wrap in half until you’re ready to pack it can minimize this. A splash of lime juice can also keep avocado fresh longer.
Keep it fresh
Since lettuce is delicate, I recommend adding an ice pack to keep it fresh and crisp until lunchtime.
Pack it separately
Keep fresh fruits and veggies in a separate compartment. Not sure what to add? These tasty and filling school lunch sides go great with wraps!
