What Goes Into a Healthy School Lunch?

A healthy school lunch looks different for every child, but the best school lunches usually combine familiar foods with fruit, vegetables, protein, and filling carbohydrates. Most importantly, the food needs to be something your child will eat.

Your effort counts just as much as what you put inside your kids’ lunches, and there’s no such thing as a perfect meal.

Use the sections below to choose simple ingredients from each group and mix them into a balanced lunch.

Fruits

Fruit adds natural sweetness, fiber, and easy-to-eat carbohydrates to a packed lunch.

There is no single best way of sending fruit to school for lunch. Pack it whole, sliced, or make fruit the main part of the lunch with one of these ideas:

  • Protein Lunchable with Fruit
  • Rainbow Snack Box + Sandwich
  • Fruit Bento Box

How to Pack Fruit in Healthy School Lunches

Pack whole fruit when your child will eat it, or send smaller portions sliced in a sealed container to reduce waste. For younger kids, fruit salad or bite-size pieces are often easier to finish.

Veggies

Vegetables can be hit or miss, so start with the ones your child already likes, whether they prefer them raw, cooked, or mixed into another food. Try packing them:

  • Inside a Wrap
  • Veggie Egg Bites
  • In a thermos, with mac and cheese
  • Veggie Nuggets

Ways to Pack Veggies for Healthy Lunches

Pack vegetables with a dip, like hummus in a bento box, or add them directly to the main food. Prepping carrots, cucumbers, peppers, or tomatoes ahead makes them easier to grab, and a tomato and avocado salad is another simple option.

Protein

A healthy lunch with protein helps kids stay full and gives the meal more staying power through the afternoon. Easy options include:

  • Fruit & Protein Lunch Box
  • Chicken Wraps
  • Hard-Boiled Eggs & Turkey Bento

Sources of Protein for School Lunches

For a sandwich-for-lunch kid, add a small protein snack box on the side. Rolled-up ham or turkey, hard-boiled eggs, beans in a quesadilla, or a yogurt smoothie are easy ways to make lunch more filling.

Carbs

Kids need carbohydrates for energy and focus throughout the school day. Pair whole grains, pasta, wraps, fruit, or other carbohydrate-rich foods with protein and produce to make lunch more satisfying.

Easy ways to include carbs are:

  • Whole-grain breads to build any delicious sandwich
  • Whole-grain pasta in an epic pasta lunch
  • A healthy sandwich wrap for lunch
  • Adding fruit to any lunch or bento box

Sources of Carbs for School Lunches

Useful lunchbox sources include whole-grain bread and crackers, pasta, wraps, fruit, and vegetables. Choose the foods your child enjoys and pair them with protein or healthy fat for a more filling meal.

How to Build a Healthy Lunchbox for Kids

Build a healthy lunchbox by choosing one main food, then adding fruit or vegetables, a protein source, and a filling carbohydrate. A bento-style lunch makes this easy because each food can have its own compartment.

I like compartmentalized lunch boxes because they keep foods separate and make portions easy to see. Add an ice pack when the lunch contains perishable foods.

Whether you’re packing a kindergarten lunch or a high school lunch, adjust the portions and ingredients to fit your child’s appetite.
